When I got home this evening, my mother—who is recently undergoing chemotherapy treatment—startled me when she confessed that earlier, she just couldn’t keep herself from crying. I thought, no, she’d been in such high spirits lately and had faced this recent ordeal with so much strength and positivity—I was fairly certain it had to be something else. It certainly was.
The reason for her tears was the heartbreaking news she just saw on TV—about an absolutely senseless and tragic death of a student nurse, who was gunned down by a robber—for a reason most dizzyingly unwarranted, irrational, and unpardonable—a cellular phone.
Her name is Ruby Jade M. Ruba, 20 years young, who was already scheduled to graduate from her nursing course this March. Yesterday, she and a friend went to a dormitory near her school in
For a cellular phone, a life was lost—a life brimming with so much promise and hope. She was, I’m very certain, a priceless jewel to her family, as could only be ascertained from the very name she bear. I cannot even begin to comprehend what evil could push one man to so easily end another’s life for such flimsiest of reason. Surely, this grievous crime could not possibly be reflective of a society, which is so besieged with hopelessness, destitution, and despair—that a human life has to be so exceedingly debased, lowering its value - to the price of a cellphone?
We can only hope that the man responsible be soon identified and brought to justice. Even then, this certainly could not completely assuage her family’s pain over such a tragic loss. Senseless.
