The Magnificent Reynaldo Lapuz

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Yeah, I’m blogging again.  I guess my mood is now drawn more to subjects of dilettantish exaltation than well, serious stuff.  And it’s all because of that kick-ass audition I saw the other night on American Idol. Looking like a caped crusader in white, clad with a pimp hat and pimp garb – I immediately guessed him to be Filipino -  he delighted the judges, Simon, Paula, and Randy with a rousing rendition of a song he said he himself wrote. He is Reynaldo (or Renaldo) Lapuz.  Remember that name.  The song is called “We’re Brothers Forever”.  Remember that song.

I definitely put faith in Simon Cowell”s “horrible feeling” that the song is going to be a “hit record”.  The song is catchy; the melody sort of hackneyed, or lifted straight out from a school anthem – but perhaps, in fairness – a tad more creative than those Lito Camo songs.  To be candid, he sings like that inebriated neighbor who selfishly latched on to the mike and sings the karaoke like there’s no tomorrow, or neighbors.

I’m sure a lot of people, because of this, would join the bandwagon and exclaim, “We’re proud to be Filipinos!”  I cringe at the thought: this more or less confirms the dearth of real stuff we should be proud of.  But man, I confess, I’m a fan.  If he did it as a stunt, (which is what I think it all was) and pulled it off as he did –  then I’m a fan.  On TV, he displayed coolness, he proved to the world that he is game, and that he could make the cantankerous Simon Cowell blench by deluging him with such ridiculous affection and veneration, like calling him: “Heaven’s Chosen”.  Who could resist such deliciously sincere flattery?  Only Reynaldo Lapuz could have pulled it off.  If anything – he is the quintessential Filipino.  Fun, likable, game, humble, positive, and sanguine – irregardless of circumstances.

If you have time to check out youtube – more and more fans (many Americans) seem to germinate and even emboldened to upload their own versions of the song.  Move over Arnel Pineda, Reynaldo Lapuz might just conquer the world in all pimp and pomp. (Kidding)… or am I?

(UPDATE 1/22/08:  It didn’t take long for me to stumble upon a splendid and - you wouldn’t believe it - soulful, version of the song "We Are Brothers Forever".  Thanks to Raymond Lee Quijano for the link.  Man, he’s now got a website too.  I’ll be d….  I just couldn’t get the f*&^%#g song off my head.)  Here it is:

Nakaka awa, nakaka lungkot, NAKAKATAWA. It made me ponder about being Filipino. Belib ako sa spirit nya.

Saw this one, too and it floored me. Gotta admire the man’s guts, though. What a stunt.

tito rolly, to think he inspired Paula Abdul to dance the way she did. ha ha ha

fellow, there is no reason to ponder about being a Filipino. What he did has got nothing to do about his being a Filipino. But HOW he did it - yun. In any case, the world seems to love the guy.

There’s no words to describe his courage and valor in facing the camera and the judges. Truly inspirational! :-) Good to see that it inspired you to blog again.

Raymond, whew!!! went to your site and may I say, “I rest my case!!” :-D

i tagged him to be Filipino the moment he opened his mouth and i was initially mortified… later on though, i was laughing like my life depended on it and i actually really like him. he got his 15 minutes of fame. well, he actually got more airtime than most people on an American Idol audition. that says a lot.

and yeah, the song is still in my head.

Posted by JoPiE at January 22, 2008, 3:21 am

Jops, last night i surfed youtube and you’d be surprised by the sheer number of people uploading their own version of the song.
Song’s still in your head huh? Get it out of your system by singing it all loud so your neighbors can hear. ha ha ha

thanks for the plug! more power to you!

He sure got his 15-minutes of fame. Although I always object to contestants wearing ridiculously clad costumes on the show, I find his act a bit embarrassing and hilarious.
Embarrassing to the fact that some contestants would go to the extreme, i.e. (wear weird costumes or do some crazy stunts) to get noticed. And some really think they can sing when they can’t even carry a tune! Remember, William Hung? But hey, that’s what got the AI (American Idol) the most watched reality show. I know he was just there for a stunt because first he is over age for the show and second let’s face it, he doesn’t have the “voice” or simply he cannot sing (nor can I) but that’s a different story. But like I said, who am I to judge, that’s what get the ratings up…..and that’s all that matters. Kudos to Reynaldo Lapuz though for putting up a show….he might not get the AI title but who knows he might be good for the “Pinoy Idols”…

‘chard, unless he is demented or delusional, he knew that he doesn’t have what it takes to get in - so it is safe to presume for what it really was - a frivolous caper. The irony is, while a lot of really, really talented Pinoys are dying to get even a glimpse of worldwide fame, this man - the epitome of mediocrity - did it with a mere antic. Well, for that alone - i still give him credit.

Posted by amor fernandez at January 24, 2008, 10:42 am

amor, wouldn’t you be saying, based on his song, that he is the “kapatid ng bayan” instead of just amigo? he he he. just wondering.

Some people have been led to believe that Viagra itself will cause you to get an erection. This is not true, the active ingredients in Viagra online allow you to respond naturally to sexual stimulation. Generic Cialis , in itself, does not cause you to become aroused.

...The Shoe, Who?

He is Atty. Alan F. Siu - a thirty-something practicing lawyer based in Cebu City, Philippines. He also teaches at a local law school. His practice includes litigation, as well as corporate and tax consultancy. He likes to write. He just found out about blogging and decided to make it his welcome diversion. As much as possible, he veers from writing about Philippine politics (and politicians) which he looks down with utter disapprobation but ...on second thought - he might be tempted to scrawl up some lampoonery on the matter after all.
