If I have 50 million pesos…I will run for mayor in my hometown. (Having said that, it means I have a ghost of a chance of running.)
I can spare around 10 mil and cheat my way into winning an election. If the other candidate could match the amount – then I can spare another 10 mil. I suppose the amount is enough to fund an army of goons – just in case I need to put on a posture of brusque physical power and intimidation. A fraction perhaps is needed to galvanize a legion of supporters. And the rest – what else, for buying votes. In case I lose the election, I could spend a million to file a protest (though it would be more of a face-saving recourse than a genuine remonstration). It is just in keeping with the known tenet that in this country – with its kind of electoral system – each losing candidate could always cry “I was cheated!” (Although the real sentiment is: “I was out-cheated!”) Why 50 million? Well, I want to be the better politician. The remaining 30 mil I need to invest in business and make sure it will yield a return of at least 20 mil at the end of the next three years. That way, I don’t have to douse my hands into the government coffers or slap contractors with oppressive “SOP”s – and still be able to fund my next election. Why 50 million? Well, I don’t want to become a Mayor and at the same time the Proprietor of my government. The idea of governance is public service, NOT a business venture (in case you forget). Why 50 million? I’m not one of those dreamy idealists – who still think they could win an election on the sole merit of his credentials. I am a transformed pragmatist who believes it is better TO ACT than TO BE ACTED UPON (that is, if I have 50 million). In other words, I’m not running. In the meanwhile, I’m working my ass towards getting that 50 million. (In précis – I’m not promising anything. If I do get that 50 million – I’d probably be someplace else burning my ass off in some exotic beach.) (And in case you don’t recognize this as a satire – I couldn’t care less.)
RT - Im not even talking about running in cebu City. Don’t take me seriously though. I like talking about politics but hate to be in it.
Posted by siu at April 3, 2007, 9:09 amI’m surprised! I did not know you can buy votes to win an election there…:) The funny thing is I even got P50 back then when I was there at one time on an election day, though I’m not able to vote because I’m not a citizen. I agree politics has become a business enterprise for some but I think it has more to do with power and who controls what for the many. By the way, P50 mil is about $1,000,000 in US for that last guy who commented.
Posted by richard at April 8, 2007, 5:05 amI suppose that was a feigned surprise ‘chard. Though this has been going on for the past many years I still resent the idea that only one family control and dominate politics as if they own the government. Many factors contribute to this verity one of which is our flawed electoral system. Perhaps I could take it if we see good governance and a marked improvement in terms of development and infrastructure. What I see however, which is utter condemnable, are people enriching themselves while in power. The richer they become, the more they could perpetuate their power.
What about conscience? Human as we are – a pained conscience is easily sedated by money and power. Simple as that.

Hi, I’m just “driving by” and taking a look. Cebu City, huh? I’m an American in Olongapo. 50 million pesos? Hmm… about $100,000 USD depending on the exchange rate. That’s going to take some time.
