House Guests, er… Ghosts?

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Friends who know me well enough won’t believe what I’m going to say and admit right now. I have been long known to be a hardened skeptic - believer only of cold hard facts. But believe you me. I really do think there is a ghost in our house, or at least some supernatural beings or something in that category. Unless my wife’s cellphone has a mind of its own… and decides to dial itself.

The house we rented and lived in since our marriage last year - is old.  Not rickety old, but old.  But it has a garage, a big gate, a large living room, with a rather high ceiling, and three bedrooms upstairs.  I also had my own sort of office and library there, and the rent is affordable.  Two or three of my relatives, however, when they got the chance to be there commented that - the house is haunted.  My sister, Lyndee already had some rather scary experience last year - with her cellphone.  One night she was awakened by a call from her friend. My sister was asked why was she calling him.  She told him, "no", she did not call him.  She was in fact sleeping - how could she have called.  But when she checked the call register - her cellphone indeed dialed the friend's number.   I have forgotten about that incident - in fact dismissed it as nothing more than presposterous - until today.

Early this morning, my wife Leizl and I drove to Escario in Cebu City in order to fetch our “manghihilot” – Manang Stella. While we were waiting outside her house, my cellphone rang. It was my wife’s phone calling. Why would she call when she’s with me? She realized she left her phone at home. Thinking that there might be some emergency back home, I answered it – and listened… but there was only that eerie silence at the other end. I decided to return the call but alas… nobody answered.

While driving back home, with Manang Stella seated at the back, my mind tried its best to cogitate deeply on why and how Leizl’s cellphone was able to dial my number? There were only two persons left at home. My father-in-law and our househelp, Neneng. Leizl’s dad couldn’t possibly touch the phone as he is half-paralyzed and besides, the cellphone’s at the study table - upstairs. Neneng, on the other hand was never known to lay her hands on things she had no business dealing with. Also, I’m pretty sure she would not be sufficiently familiar, much less knowledgeable operating a P900 Sony Ericsson. But so far, she is the only probable suspect. I also speculated the possibility that my brother might have been home from school.

When we arrived, my wife immediately asked Neneng if she used the cell phone. She said no. Was my brother home? No. I could tell first hand that she did not lie. She admitted having heard the phone ring though. That must have been me – when I dialed its number earlier. We immediately ran upstairs to take a look at the cellphone. There it was. True enough the calls were registered. But here’s the clincher – note Neneng heard the phone ring - but… the phone was on a silent mode.

‘Nang Stella apparently heard the small commotion we created, and in so grave a tone, spoke, “You have other souls living here.” What!? “Yes”, she confirmed.

“In fact,” she added, “one of them went with you. He was seated beside me at the back seat of your car.”

          Goosebumps.  I had goosebumps.

[1] Scary, huh? Up to this point, I'm still trying to figure out a logical explanation to what had happened.

Posted by siu at November 20, 2006, 11:28 am

That's scary bai, you better moved to another house ASAP. On the other hand, if it is a "HOT" ghost - it was not clear from your narration - that is another story.

Posted by merlo at November 20, 2006, 12:57 pm

as in?! scarryyy!!!!

Posted by Hazel Grace Castillo at November 20, 2006, 12:58 pm

[3] :-) I gather when you say "hot" I'd go by how you would define it. Don't worry, ipa-ila ila unya teka.

Posted by siu at November 20, 2006, 1:04 pm

[4] Hazel, either that or there must be something wrong with my phone, or Leizl's. She just called me and claimed that she received several text messages from me. I didn't text her.

You had goosebumps; I had multiple goosebumps.

I stay with cold hard facts too. BUT I do not discount things that I do not know about and do not understand. I don't believe in ghosts but it doesn't follow that there are, in fact, no ghosts, right?

I just hope that don't do to me what they did to you. :-P Dyan na lang sila…. sana they don't travel via the comment box.

Do you remember the incident that happened the day before your wedding day, we stayed in your house, Jan2x was very confused when he take a bath & the sink inside the comfort room upstairs suddenly fell down even no one was touching it. Jan2x was very confused what happened because he's taking a bath inside the bathroom while it happened.Nararamdman mo ba ang lamig ng simoy ng hangin? siguro, talagang malapit na ang pasko…

o di kaya, may katabi kanang multo!!!!!
Maybe your house is really haunted & Spooky!
he he he…..!
Just pray na lang to God for all your safety.

[7] sassy (connie)- Yeah, I'm opening my mind to things that seem unexplainable. If this phenomenon can utilize cellphones as medium, I don't see why they can't go through the comment box. Hala ka! (just kidding)

Posted by siu at November 20, 2006, 7:11 pm

Alan and liezl, believe it or not, ghost is just a ghost. matakot ka sa tao not sa multo. tip namin ay just bear in mind that God is the most powerful of all.kung evil man ang multong iyan, isipin mo lang na nandiyan ang panginoon. pray the rosary, the most powerful prayer. if you have no time, THINK THAT GOD IS ALWALYS BY YOUR SIDE. HE CONTROLS EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE.not the ghosts!! talagang walang challenge ang mga multo.

[8] Nang gigi & janjan - What happened to Janjan at the house was hard to explain too. Actually, I never gave it much thought, until now. YOur'e right, prayers would be a good answer.

[10] Ingon si Nang Stella, these are "good" beings. Mga puti kuno. You're right, mas angay pa ta mahadlok sa silingan nga kawatan. He he he.

Posted by siu at November 20, 2006, 7:16 pm

my cousin asked me to put a pen and paper and number it from 1 to 49… let her/him (the ghost) encircle 6 numbers and let's use these numbers for lotto… who knows, they will lead us to our first million… hehehe…. wanna try? ;)

[13] Basin mangayo nya ug bahin ;)

Posted by siu at November 21, 2006, 3:14 pm

Was your house blessed? Ipabless na lang balik. Then talk to "them" na i-share lang ang balay ninyo, para one big happy family mo :-)

Or maybe sobra lang ka high-tech phone ninyo. Also, make sure to tell "them" not to use the phone too much kay basin maglong-distance nya, gastos. :-)

Or maybe another logical reason is…… Hubog lang mo. :-)

bitaw, don't scare me. Manny & I just moved to a new house.

sige lansiut, good luck and God bless na lang. Hi to leizl and to "them"

there are events we cant really explain why…i had experienced it too! I have one very scary story about ghosts. I believe them bisan dili na kaayo ko religious this time but i saw one. the ghost of a friend who committed suicide by hanging on a wire. That is why i believe in ghost stories. Bisan skeptic na sad ko karon mutoo lang gihapon ko na we have souls na when we die of a sudden death our souls would still be wandering about murag di pa maka cross over dayon. Di ba? I will tell you bout that story when we get the chance to talk. Maybe on our reunion? Hehehehe!

[15] Net, we don't know if the house was blessed before we occupied. But we're thinking nga mag pa blessing na. The house had been vacant for 10 months before we occupied it. One of my clients who knew about this told me that "they" used the cellphone in order to shake me into believing that they exist. Anyway, we will begin constructing a new house sometime January next year. Btw, congrats on your new home. Diri man si asok joe. Regards to all the friends and cousins there in the States.

Lev, mas kulba diay na imo! Having actually seen a ghost? That's way too scary.

Posted by siu at November 22, 2006, 10:11 am

Lan, Your blog on your house being haunted seems to draw a lot of attention. I do believe in paranormal activities although I have never had an experience like you nor have I ever seen a ghost (though I would like too). I would say stay and wait until you actually see one. It’s fascinating to hear someone telling you about seeing a ghost but the thing is they always say they run after seeing it. Shouldn’t you be curious what they have to say or do after a while of looking at them? Don’t you want to feel or touch them? I know it may seem scary but I don’t think they can do any harm. That is an experience you should not pass on by running away, don’t you think? I guess the ghosts of today are coping up with the new technology and I agree with Janet, be careful coz he/she might call long distance….hehehe

[19] 'chard, yeah it has drawn a lot of attention - partly because I informed some people about it. My intention was to draw ideas and opinions from them about what had happened. I have long been comfortable with what I know as logical and rational. It seems this is the first time that i experience something out-of-this-world. I guess, as human beings with limited knowledge, we fear the unknown and the unexplainable. Up to this point, however, a large part of me still searches for some logical answers. In fact, I have queried about viruses that might have contaminated the phone - and if so, whether it could dial on its own. However, I am amazed by the sheer certainty people felt about the existence of this paranormal phenomenon.

As regards curiousity, I am planning to have my videocam fixed and try to install it somewhere in the house. We don't know - not everybody (or everything) is camera shy, right?

ngee..ingun sila, "the ghost is within you"…

Posted by jeanne at November 25, 2006, 6:19 pm

Find out if its a good or a bad ghost. good ghost are friendly and there is nothing to worry about that. The bad one’s are those who inflict physical harm, frightens you or even cause conflict among residents in that house. Generally, they make their presence felt becasue they have something to say. It could be that they are asking for prayers so that they can finally rest, or they might have unfinished business that you can be of help. They will increase their disturbance if you let yourself be affected it. The more you are afraid , the more they will manifest. They will built on your fear. Do not be afraid, always recite the Apostles Creed when you felt their presence, Pray also the Our Father and the Hail Mary, much more have a prayerful life and family devotion by reciting te Holy Rosary as a Family. If you are not Catholic, recite Psal 23 or Psalm 91. Yes they are real. If you talk to them and ask them not to disturb you, if they are good ghost they will respect you. Just pray for their souls. The bad ghost needs to be casted out and an expert from your church can help you with that. Good luck.

fellow, thanks for the tip. But to be honest about it, i’m still a sceptic. I’m pretty there had to be some rational explanation. But then again, being a skeptic, my mind is always open.

I could say that Roses Neverfull will be another classic replica handbags according to Stephen Spouse’s contribution and accomplishments for lv design history. This Roses Neverfull series could be the last commemorative pattern to the great artist. See those beautiful roses on the replica louis vuitton , more and more I realize they are not just roses but the spiritual continuation of Stephen’s life: his blood, his passion and his everlasting palatial heart. He left the best and most classic works to us . I really appreciate that replica bags could use his last design.

...The Shoe, Who?

He is Atty. Alan F. Siu - a thirty-something practicing lawyer based in Cebu City, Philippines. He also teaches at a local law school. His practice includes litigation, as well as corporate and tax consultancy. He likes to write. He just found out about blogging and decided to make it his welcome diversion. As much as possible, he veers from writing about Philippine politics (and politicians) which he looks down with utter disapprobation but ...on second thought - he might be tempted to scrawl up some lampoonery on the matter after all.
