This was yesterday morning. My clients almost couldn’t contain their obvious trepidation. When the case was finally called, the judge summoned the couple to the bench. This was their day of reckoning. It had taken more than five years, four different prosecutors, and three different judges – apparently a simple case but which turned out to be a long and distressing journey for them, but endured it all the same – for the trial to finally see its end – the day of promulgation.
I had stood by them – and for the best of reasons. I knew from the very outset that they were falsely accused of a crime – unfortunately by people who, indomitably and with no apparent reason, coldly wished for a wrongful conviction. The worst and painful part – accused and accusers are siblings. This was a case of a personal hatred and senseless vendetta that blinded the accusers cold and insensible of their family ties.
When asked by the court, I politely acquiesced that the dispositive portion of the Decision be read publicly and dispense with the reading of the arguments therein.
